On 28 February 1980, Gianni Comino, a skilled climber from Piedmont who, alongside Gian Carlo Grassi, is regarded as one of the pioneers of ice climbing, died on the Brenva face of Mont Blanc. The accident occurred whilst he was attempting to climb a serac to the right of the Poire, caused by a falling block of ice.
A bivouac in Val Ferret (Bivacco Comino), situated on the shoulder of the south-east spur of Mont Rouge di Greuvetta, is named after him.
